Hang gliding & Paragliding with the Derbyshire Flying Centre UK

Welcome to the Derbyshire Flying Centre. Where we are poised to open up new horizons for you to share what has been described as “an experience beyond imagination”- the ability to fly free as a bird. The centre was established in 1987 by Stephen Hudson CFI. Stephen has been flying for 3o+ years, has represented Gt. Britain in international competitions and is a BHPA Merit Award winner in 2009. The School operates in the Hope Valley centre of the Peak District National Park. This unique Location enables quick and easy access to both outstanding training and flying sites. Meeting place and time. We usually meet next door to Lyndale house in Bradwell. (opposite the Shoulder of Mutton Pub S33 9HJ) Map on find us page. The course starts at 10am and finishes around 4.30pm-5.30pm.

BHPA Membership. Is compulsory and the required training membership is organised on your first day. Insurance. Equipment. All Hang gliding and Paragliding Equipment is provided by us for Taster days and Elementary courses eg. Hang Glider, Paraglider, harnesses and helmets. For the Club pilot and Pilot courses you can purchase or hire flight equipment from us. It is possible to use your own flight equipment once it has been inspected and approved by us for your use in the school, The inspection fee is usually £150.

Fees. All course fees must be filly paid in advance or on the first day of your course. Please see booking form and conditions for full details.

Age. The Minimum age for Flying with us  is 14 accompanied by a parent. 16 with the parental permission. 18+ There is no upper age limit.

Clothing. You will need a pair of boots that support your ankles firmly. Layers of clothing is recommended. A pair of gloves, A windproof jacket. Sun protection cream.

Lunches. Usually we go to a local cafe or Pub for lunch (no alcohol), You should bring a packed lunch and a drink just in case!

Print a Booking Form Once you have decided which course to do: Print a booking and conditions form (can be found here) and send your completed booking form with a deposit of £25 made payable to S Hudson or Derbyshire Flying Centre. All Hang Gliding and Paragliding training is weather dependent and any days cancelled due to weather conditions will be credited to you and can be taken with any suitable courses within the year. All courses must be taken within a year from the first receiving your booking.

Hang Gliders are semi rigid have aluminium and carbon fibre spars and battens the wing is covered in a tight polyester cloth that gives manoeuvrability and strength. All are certified by the BHPA or DHV to 6g positive and 3g negative. Hang gliders weigh around 30kg. They take 20 minutes to rig for flight and are usually launched from hills. Hang gliders are capable of flight speeds of 14 mph to 70 mph and glide angles of 15/1. For control the pilot simply moves their body forward for more speed or backward to slow down left to go left and right to go right, this simplicity of control gives the Hang glider pilot a direct and unique connection to the air.
